Artist Statment.
The core of my work focuses on my own lived experiences, on the human body, along with inspiration from the general observations from everyday life. Observation is a large part of my creative process, asking the big questions of why and how. Observation leads to research and experimentation, which fuel my practice in creating new branches of interest, building upon what I already have and how I can use these skills in the future.
My inspirations for my work are from a wide range of genres such as Surrealism, Neo-Expressionism and Fauvism. Artists such as Egon Schiele, Salvador Dali, Paul Reid and Ken Currie are what inspire my creative view as an artist and how I'd like to follow my practice through as someone dedicated to art, and motivated by the connection and work around of traditional media and techniques with a contemporary style.
When people view my work, I don’t have a reaction in mind for them; rather, I hope they feel something that they relate to themselves. My work is selfish at times, focusing on personal values. I don’t expect others to feel the same as I do when looking at my work, but I enjoy that everyone has their own subjective opinion.
There's a privilege to be able to be an artist, working with other organisations and companies such as the University of the Highlands and Islands, NHS Fife, Fife council and Fife College, alongside being in a self-organised placement at the National Galleries of Scotland, has all been eye-opening experiences that have shaped my professional practice.
